✍🏽 **3 SPOTS LEFT: June writing workshop is live! Register here (Sunday, June 26, 10am - 12pm PST).
❤️🩹 Lots of shifts to my professional life recently (oodles of details forthcoming!), which means Recovery Club is on hiatus for the month of June; stay tuned for updates which will be announced here and on Instagram.
Questions? Ask. I’m here and I’d love to hear from you.
As an unpartnered and child-free woman who lives with a creature who cannot talk back (though you can bet we have full-on conversations where I translate his doggy expressions into human words), one of the ways I keep myself company is by listening to lots of podcasts.
I am not the best at assigning a genre to things (please don’t ever ask me, “what kind of music do you like?”), but I’d say that most of my listening would fall under the self-help category (I don’t know how else to describe it). I listen to things that inspire me to better myself, to learn about myself and the world, and my place in the world; I listen to this podcast on relationships; I listen to conversations between creatives/artists/activists/scientists; occasionally I throw in an episode of Smartless when I want a trio of idiots to make me laugh.
I listen to this podcast and this podcast, and, aside from those two, this week I realized that much of what I listen to is the same four-or-five people interviewing each other over and over (I’m guessing if you read this newsletter you know who I mean). I get a lot from these voices/conversations! And, I’ve been thinking about how many voices and perspectives I don’t hear and I’d like to widen my listening.
All this to say, I’m asking for your recommendations.
Who are you listening to? Who is helping you free your mind? What voices do you want to lift up? What margins are you inside of/or exploring? Please share!
Also: fuck genres, I want to know it all.
In love, xxoo dani
📖 Read: I copied these rules down onto paper, hung them above my workspace.
👀 Watch: Someone sent this to me the other day and at first I was like, cool cool cool, a feel-good story about a couple of bros. But then they got really vulnerable and there was a physical intimacy between them I almost never see between straight/cis men. I found it so moving. The article is great, too.
"When you learn to get up before the sun rises, it’s peaceful. You can think. You build a relationship with your darkness. Then all you have to do is run into the light."
🎧 Listen: MY OWN THOUGHTS. Got annoyed with podcasts this week (see above) and so it was a lot of quiet shower time/long-walks-with-Tater-without-my-phone-time.
ok on this walk i brought my phone.
Thank you so much for being a part of this community. If you like this newsletter, please consider leaving a comment, pressing the little “heart” button, or becoming a paid subscriber. Or respond and say hi, I *always* love hearing from you.
First, Tater is the cutest!!! You’ve probably already heard of all of these but here goes- I know I’m late to the party on this one but I’ve been listening to “Big Magic” lately -Elizabeth Gilbert’s podcast. One of my faves was “Sugar Calling” - I wish she’d bring it back. I do love “Super Soul Sundays.” I never watched the Oprah show or really paid much attention to her at all 🤷♀️ but she gets so many amazing people on there. I’m thankful for this post to learn about some new ones so thanks!
Why We Bleep by Mylar Melodies - it's ostensibly about synthesizers, but it's really about creativity and, often, the future of music. Try his interview with Sarah Davachi and see where it brings you. His interview with Surgeon is also really inspiring about just putting yourself out there, comfort zone be damned.
That's about it. I don't really like listening to podcasts or voices on the radio (NPR e.g.), but I'm also open to suggestions!
+1000000 to Maintenance Phase! I also love Jamie Loftus' shows (Ghost Church and Lolita Podcast in particular), Normal Gossip, Conspirituality and Still Processing.
Hi Dani, I’m in a similar boat with dogs + podcasts :) you might like Hidden Brain by Shankar Vedantam. It explores human behavior and is such a good podcast, I find myself sitting in the car long after I’ve arrived at my destination simply to finish listening. Or I’ll take an extra lap around the park if dog and I are on a walk :)
